Greatest Generation - Our Regrets

George Will's current reference to the Cromwellian era ditty, "The World Turned Upside Down", supposedly played at Cornwallis's surrender to Washington at Yorktown, applies to a multitude of upside-down issues.

Take, for example, the substitution of aircraft monitoring housing in Britain for excess energy consumption, instead of battling for national survival in the Battle of Britain.

Or GPS location of American residences by the Census Bureau.  For what purpose?

The speed of devolution from positions of significance in the world for both nations to breast-pounding mea culpas for real and imagined national sins is breathtaking.  Have we gone from the Greatest Generation to the Wimpiest Generation in a few short decades?

There must be some aging survivors of that epic conflict who wish they would not have lived to see our current circumstances.  I am grateful that they gave us that window of peace, freedom, and opportunity.  I am profoundly ashamed that I and my fellow Boomers have allowed the great gifts we enjoyed because of their sacrifice to be trampled underfoot as if they were nothing.
